About Us

Our History

This site is about sports journalism in the Gambia for sports journalists by sports journalists who write, broadcast, photograph or handle their own websites or with a platform on social media to report and promote sports and in these multi-tasking times perhaps all of the above named.

When the SJAG was formed some 15 years ago, its founders could not have envisaged how the business or that of sports Journalism would evolve over the coming decades. And as reality and the dictates of modern technology is embraced, the SJAG has no choice but to endeavor to adapt and grow to reflect the universal changes.

This has been especially important in recent years, when the rate of change in the media landscape has become much faster than ever before.

The SJAG’s founding fathers had to contend with what was on the ground, too few sports to write and report on, Olympic representation was low with  GNOC but the then GFA, were lucky to have their sports monopolized by the few sport press at hand.

The same cannot be said of the current scenario with the crop of young and determined aspirant to become.

The two main functioning sporting association, GNOC and the few Olympic sports they represent namely cycling, table tennis at Youth Center, Basketball at Foyer and later Manneh Sillah Memorial court, Cricket and athletics occupied the MaCcarthy square as a multi-purpose ground and the Box bar in Banjul was the Mecca of Football in the country. From these grounds, the pacesetters would inspire the current crop.

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then, Sporting press evolved, media houses Mushroom and multiplied, athletes grew and success recorded as headline were made and reported on.

Of late, many members of the SJAG had ventured beyond the shores of this country, to cover and report on international events like the Olympics, world cup Qualifiers and others.

Most Sporting Associations have identified media officers as the need becomes more evident and obvious.

The SJAG has been involved with the organization of International sporting events and its personnel represented in many other sporting committees for their promotion and proper dissemination of information.

The SJAG’s website is here to reflect on the changing face of sports journalism and its activities, sources for sports news while also supporting the country’s ever increasing desire to promote her sports and sporting personalities.

It is the SJAG’s desire to liaise, collaborate and associate with regional, continental and Global partners in promoting, nurturing of talents and training of our members.

The SJAG’s annual sports award was first held some eleven years ago. The award has been recognized as a National event meant to Honor, recognize, Reward and celebrate our heroes and heroines as we continue to Inspire. It’s also a moment when sports Journalist reflect on their annual activities where we recognized excellence in our own profession

Partner Organisations

    Partner organisations

  • The SJAG works with different institutions and sporting bodies locally and abroad.
    • The Gambia Press Union
    • The Gambia Press Union (GPU) was established on April 20, 1979, as the umbrella organisation for media professionals in The Gambia. With trade union and professional pursuits, the Union is mandated to safeguard the welfare of media professionals and promote press freedom. The registration is a culmination of a number of attempts that were frustrated. The first attempt to register an association of journalists was made in the 1940s following the enactment of the Newspaper Registration Act, 1934. The efforts led by Edward Francis Small curtailed by the colonial government, who would block another attempt in 1956. Following the attainment of independence in 1965, another attempt was made but it was again rejected. A breakthrough was eventually made in 1979. The founding fathers include William Dixon-Colley, Deyda Hydara, Baa Tarawale, M.B. Jones, Ngange Thomas and Pap Saine. In over four decades of its existence, the Union has evolved from an organisation whose members used to gather under a veranda, to a prominent national labour and media rights organisation of international repute. The GPU now boasts of a rapidly increasing membership base of more than five hundred regular and freelance media professionals from print, radio, TV and online. The Union has a functioning Executive Committee that provides strategic leadership and effective oversight; a highly motivated and qualified staff that run its day-to-day affairs; and an expanding network of national and international partners that provide platform for opportunities of funding and contributing to the promotion of shared values and interests. The GPU is one of most democratic and resilient organisations in the country. The Union has since its inception been holding periodic congress and change of leadership seven times since.
