The women’s side won 2-1 in a game played in Tunislast Friday to complete a 3-1 aggregate win over their Tunisian hosts. The Gambia had earlier secured a last gasp 1-0 win in the first leg of the qualifiers played at the Box Bar mini-stadium in Brikama, a fortnight ago.

The Gambian side that also defeated Sierra Leone 4-3on aggregate in the first round missed a second-half penalty just past the hour mark. Coach Buba Jallow’s boys made the country proud as they came from a goal down to secure the win and in the process made history by winning the country a first-ever Women championship berth.

The achievement momentarily drags away people's attention from the recent headlines surrounding the administration of Gambian football. They are also surprised qualifiers from Africa if compared to bigger footballing powerhouses on the continent such as Ghana and Nigeria who will be the other two African representatives in Azerbaijan. The triumphant Gambiangirls arrived in Banjul on Monday and were received upon arrival by officials of the newly set up normalisation committee in charge of running Gambian football as well as the officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The Under 17 Women’s World Cup will be held in Baku and Lankaran from the 22 of September to October 13.
