SJAG duo grab national journalism awards

  • The secretary general of the country's sports press, Alieu Ceesay, and fellow executive member, Omar Jarju of the Chronicle Newspaper, received due recognition for excellent pieces in the health and medical reporting, and sports reporting categories.


    Ceesay who now works with Qtv won the health and medical reporting prize for the second time in a row, whiles Omar Jarju bagged his third sports reporting award in four years.


    "This is a very proud moment for the SJAG and all its members," SJAG president Musa Sise told sjag.gm.


    "The exploits of our triumphant colleagues at the GPU award tells a lot about this budding young press body.


    "They have shown class and style. SJAG remains the most progressive and committed affiliate of the GPU  and we would like to felicitate all winners and encourage those who might have missed out. 


    "Congratulation to Alieu Ceesay, our infatigable SG  and Exco member Omar Jarju, we remain proud."


    The duo's triumphant win was well received by their fellow executive members who were full of praise for their commitment, passion and excellence in journalism.


    "Success stories can't be accident, rather its base on hardwork, and without doubt Alieu (Ceesay) and Omar's (Jarju) achievements are connected to their actions and commitment they put across to win another award from the GPU award, and as their colleague am proud of them," said Treasurer Mrs Kaddy Cham.


    "The continues successes of our colleagues and members in the GPU awards is another affirmation that the SJAG is the most progressive affiliate of the union," said assistant secretary general Momodou Bah.


    "I join my SJAG family to celebrate and congratulate our colleagues for their deserved awards in the health and medical, and sports categories," he added.


    The GPU award acknowledges the excellence of Gambian journalists every year since its inception in 2016.


    "I am happy and proud to be among the winners of this year’s National Journalism Award. This has further motivated me to work harder to win more accolades," said the winner of the health and medical reporter of the year, Alieu Ceesay.


    "I dedicate the award to all medical personnel who sacrifice their lives to safe the sick."


    "I feel very happy and humbled winning this award," says Omar Jarju.


     "Emerging as the overall winner, with over 25 entries across the country is such a humbling experience. The feeling cannot be any less, I must say.


    "It is quite inspiring and motivating for me. It gives me reassurance that our work as journalists is being appreciated.


    "The award has also spurred the drive to work harder regardless of the growing challenges for sports journalists in this country," added Jarju.
