SJAG Mourns, A legend, George Gomez recipient of SJAG ‘Contribution to Sports Award’

  • Mr. Gomez was friend to the sports press and mentor to many. He was president of the then GFA from 1990-1992. George Gomez was a recipients of the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia’s National Sports award to people who have invaluably contributed to Gambian sport in 2017.

    He was a certified First and Second Level Sports Administration, diploma in Sports Management, FIFA Futuro Certificate in Sports Administration and is a Lecturer in Sports Administration courses.

    George Gomez was an active member of the Olympic movement, spearheaded mission to a number of Summer Olympic and Commonwealth games as Chef de mission namely Atlanta 1996, Malaysia 1998, Sydney 2000, Manchester 2002, Athens 2004, Melbourne 2006, and Beijing 2008 Olympics.

    Mr. Gomez was a member of the GFF Awards and Legends Committee and his contributions lead to the success of the first organized Football Awards held in January 2019.

    The former Head of the Gambia Olympic movement will be vividly remembered for his command and knowledge in sports having spoken and authored a widely a number of publication namely "Milestones in Gambian Football" which chronicles the most important events of Football history in the Gambia.

    His book cradled the formative years and recent Gambian Football development. He recently hailed the GFF Football leadership for their show of recognition and honor to late Alh. Momodou Njie (Biri Biri) who also passed away in July.

    George Gomez was a GNOC Hall of Famer in 1999 and Sports Personality winner in 2002
